Scientific name: Mungos mungo

Size:Length 30 - 45cm, Tail 15 - 30cm, Weight 1.5 - 2.5kg

 

Lifespan: 11 years

Diet: feed primarily on insects, myriapods, small reptiles, and birds. Millipedes and beetles make up most of their diet, but they also commonly eat ants, crickets, termites, grasshoppers, caterpillars and earwigs. Other prey items of the mongoose includefrogs, lizards, small snakes, birds and the eggs of both birds and reptiles.

Range: commonly found in the central and eastern parts of Africa.

Protection Status: no immediate danger of extinction

Did you know? Banded mongoose have been seen removing ticks from warthogs in Kenya and Uganda. This symbiotic relationship benefits both species: the banded mongoose feed while the warthogs are cleaned.
