Playgrounds have an important role in the education of the young, but the Tete SOS Children’s Village playground was in need of a serious facelift. A group of concerned citizens decided that with some tyres, colourful paint and a great deal of enthusiasm from adults and some fun-loving youngsters, this play space could be improved and the children from SOS would have a better environment to play in.

Led by an energetic team from Kentz Training Centre, ably assisted by Sonja and Johnny Dos Santos and Debbie de Jongh, the rehabilitation began and the promise of a colourful playground was in sight. All were included and the fun began with the children running tyre races, so everyone witnessed how a simple tyre can be such fun to play with.

After the races, the children never tired of jumping in and out of tyres while the older ones joined in by digging holes for the placement of some new equipment that was purchased and they had lots of fun painting everything, from jungle gyms to the tyres and the surrounding walls. It was a wonderful team effort.

Today the playground is well-used and brings joy to the children - and to the adults who helped make it happen. Phase Two of the project will be more improvements.  Volunteers are welcome to get in touch with Debbie de Jongh at Casa Branca.
